Asus 1005PE-PU17-BU Review by S. Jones (CA United States)

I bought this netbook last year. The "end" button never worked on it. When I called Asus, they told me it was s software problem and I should go to Windows to have it fixed (even though I bought the Windows installed). After that, the battery died within about 6 months. It didn't even start to charge less, it just died completely. The computer wouldn't even start up unless it was plugged in. I called them a number of times, each time having to be on hold 30 minutes or more. Each time, they had me do the same thing - remove the battery, hold down the power button and then recharge for 8 hours. This went on for quite some time since I couldn't always devote 30 minutes of hold time. The last time I called, they told me I had a bad battery and I'd have to purchase a new one.

From the beginning, it was never a good laptop anyway. Looks like I'll be going back to Dell, especially with the lack of service I received. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of Asus.

I got this netbook for Christmas last year. I use it for work, school and entertainment. I generally use it for spread sheets and documents, but I also do plenty of web surfing (including videos). The battery lasts all day for me. During a normal day of collecting behavioral data in elementary school classrooms, typing notes during lectures, researching information on the interwebz and general entertainment, including watching the occasional movie, I regularly get 10-12 hours of battery life. It is also small enough to carry around in my hand all day.

I like Win 7 Starter a lot better than the Vista garbage that was on my last laptop, but the limitations on personalization prompted me to upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate. I was also able to install LinuxMint and dual-boot into either OS. After getting more familiar with Mint I ended up removing Windows completely. I am still new to Linux so it is a bit of a learning curve, but Mint makes everything work, including WiFi, on this netbook. It is simple, clean and fast.

As others mentioned, I would recommend the RAM upgrade. With only 1GB it is functional, but another Gig makes it a pretty snappy little device. I would also consider switching to LinuxMint an upgrade, even for the average Windows user.

Our need was to have a portable input device to organize and record our public library books. Input data such as number of checkouts, condition and correct classification determines the active lifespan of each book. The Asus Eee PC Seashell Netbook purchased from Amazon.com gave us just what we need. Onsite information is easily recorded and the decision to keep or delete the book from inventory is made. The long (14 hour) battery life keeps recharging interruptions from occurring. It saves time and effort.
